Birthday Time

Today marked my best friend's 28th birthday. Lovingly dubbed my wife we have been as close as sisters for five years now so how could I not mark the very real transition firmly into 'late twenties'? I'm not the best at gift giving by any stretch of the imagination. You'd think I'd have it down by now especially knowing her so well but we have very different tastes that only align in a few instances so what I am instantly drawn to may not be what Christina would be.

Since Christina's husband had evicted her from their home while he cooked her a special birthday dinner (he's a chef and a lovely one at that) I decided to try and make her coming over a special deal. I opened the door and thrust orange roses broken with bundles of gypsophila in her face along with a massive foil purple star balloon while shouting "Happy Birthday! as loudly as I could get away with without setting off my demon cough. Once she'd unwrapped her main present, the necklace, we set off in search of coffee only to find the coffee shop closed at 4pm and although we came away caffeine-less I did pick her up a beautiful white ceramic butterfly bowl to hold snacks and trinkets (the coffee shop triples as a gift shop selling everything from East Of India to handmade items as well as a rather lovely hairdressers). We ended up at Wetherspoons and a little trip to the pet shop to talk to the rabbits and pick up some dog treats.

Once home after calming the dogs down (repeatedly - they really get excited in her company) I lit two candles on a rather huge blackforest gateaux and let everyone just go to town with a spoon. The best way to celebrate a birthday is surely with a slightly wet cake - right? Right.

All in all it was a lovely afternoon and I adore seeing my best friend so spoiled and content. It turns out her husband had come up trumps with the meal and there are leftover homemade profiteroles making their way to me tomorrow courtesy of his beautiful leftovers (thank God for a chef making too much of everything - Nicholas, you're my hero).

Until I stuff my face, happy final hours of your birthday, life partner! You're all the woman I need!

  1. That's so wonderful, Ella, and I have to laugh at the humor you included in your post...wet cake isn't all that bad...right? Hahaha. That necklace is very beautiful though. Reminds me a bit of the Heart of the Ocean from Titanic.

  2. I was going to say the same thing about the necklace, it looks just like the one from Titanic! It's so beautiful, it sounds like a lovely birthday.
