Whenever I love a blog I often think about the process of the blogger behind the technology. Is there a ritual of sorts or a room that has to be just-so for the blogging to happen? What kind of technology do they use to get everything so flawless? As part of a competition that Curry's are running to win a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 tablet I thought I'd show you exactly where and how I work.
Right now, I don't have an office although I really should. Everything is being prepped to be painted and for new furniture to be slowly moved in so I can have a working space of my very own in the house which, to me, is imperative as I work on the computer most of the day. Distractions are in abundance where I currently work (right at the end of the sofa near the plug sockets - very spacious) with the TV that's usually playing something on Netflix as either background noise or something to entertain my youngest child after lunch before I take another break. I work on a 2006 white MacBook that's battered, bruised and missing a delete key but it still works and for that I am very, very thankful. From this I send e-mails, keep track of my timetable, blog, edit photos and work on blog designs so I spend a lot of my time staring at a 13.3" screen without retina display.
The love of my life is my iPhone 5S. It holds everything from all of my e-mails, social media, reminders, lists, calendar, timetable, texts, phone call logs and is my lifeline from work to play. Thank God I installed Flappy Bird when I did because it's seen me through many a sleepless night (along with my insane Tumblr addiction). I don't play too many games but I'm addicted to social media websites like Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest which also serve selfish interests as they're great ways to promote both my blog and business too. Whenever I'm sat down just messing around or on the move it's my phone that I'm glued to and I save my laptop for the jobs it just isn't up to.
I used to dress up to work thinking that putting on nice clothes and make up would get me more in the zone but lately I've been working until later and later in the evening as I've been busy during the day with my family and home so it's more like business up top (in case of in an impromptu Skype call) and comfort on the bottom - cosy socks and fleecy pyjama trousers covered in pug hair in the above photos, of course. Very chic!
I used to have a tablet but when times got tough it was the first thing on my list to sell but the more months I go without one, the more I miss it. Although it isn't as powerful or as diverse as a computer or as compact as a phone it's the best of both worlds, right there in the middle calling to be taken on train journeys, used in bed or used in place of one or the other for work and play for a much better user experience. There are times I won't lug my laptop on the train when I have a DSLR to take with me plus my phone which does the same but it's difficult to work on one (plus, you can't comment on Blogger blogs via the Safari app - very annoying). There are times when my laptop in bed is just not practical and my phone is just so small and difficult to handle. Plus, it would definitely complete my Holy Trinity.
So as I write this I'm in my pyjama bottoms with a full face of make-up and my hair done chewing a Maoam bar but that's okay because all I need to do is change my bottom half and I'm good to go for a face to face meeting. Versatility is surely key?
(*) This is not a sponsored post, just a competition entry. You can enter by writing your own blog post on how you use your technology and where you use it and tweeting the URL to @CurrysPCWorld with the hashtag #PortableOffice. Entries close February 28th at midday. Good luck but...don't take my prize. I need that Holy Trinity.
