Sleep Don't Come Easy

Comfortzone Memory Foam Pillow c/o Dunelm Mill - £24.99 here.

I am an insomniac. I have suffered from insomnia and disturbed sleep for at least ten years and it is the bane of my existence. You know in Fight Club when "With insomnia, nothing's real. Everything's far away. Everything's a copy of a copy of a copy" is said? That's how it is in real life. Only more tiring. With Fibromyalgia sleep disturbance is wholly common and when you're already in intense pain that wakes you up, comfort is key.

So when Dunelm sent me a memory foam pillow to try out, I was excited. I've heard good things about memory foam but never owned any as I'm the kind of girl to pick up the cheapest thing available. I have an incredibly comfortable, soft and warm down duvet but that was gifted to me by a family member. These things are expensive and I never considered them to be an essential item. Until now, that is because it is just so comfortable!

At first I was unsure. I lay on the pillow and it felt firm. I wondered how on earth I was ever going to get comfortable on it. Then the foam started to mould to the shape of my head and as I sank lower and lower I realised it was providing not only support but also comfort. So I tried sleeping on it and while I did still wake up through the night I was rather comfortable. I've tried sitting back on it on chairs and it helps my lower back. I've tried sitting on it on hard chairs and it helps my bum. It's just a very helpful little pillow and I don't sleep without it now. There've been times I've been sleeping on the sofa due to the heat and Dexter who's still very anxious without me at least in the room and I've asked boyfriend to go bring me my pillow because I can't imagine sleeping without it.

I've already ordered another for boyfriend (who sleeps like a rock regardless with no pain but he deserves one) and I'm looking in to a memory foam mattress too and have recommended it to two friends with sleep discomfort and my grandfather who has neck trouble. I thought it was just a ploy to sell units with the rave reviews on how memory foam changes lives but honestly, I'm not so sure anymore as it's certainly better than any pillow I've tried (stuffed, foam and down) and while it's not as soft and immediately comfortable as a lovely down pillow but you really feel the difference in the morning which is really all that counts for me.

* Please excuse the stock image - mine is covered in mascara from a night I forgot to take my make-up off and I am figuring out a way of how to clean the outer fabric.

  2. Sounds like it's really helped you out! I've got a memory form mattress topper, much cheaper than buying the whole mattress and pretty much the same effect! xx
