Girls World

Girls world is always not quite finished. The skirting needs to be painted, the lines cleaned up, the window seat needs to be built, the beds need to be made and storage needs to be taken into consideration. A few days ago inspired by Kaelah from The Clueless Girl's geometric wall the girls' and I took on a project which didn't quite go as planned but still serves as a useful reminder that we can do things as a team (the power of three, eh?) and that a little bit of mess doesn't have to mean the end of surprise creativity. I leave these messes in because they were created by two little girls age five and three who love to create and for a few months I can live with a little mess for a lot of joy.

We spend time in their room creating whether it's bedtime stories from our minds, paper pom pom's to hang from the ceilings like clouds, painting at the desk or switching the heads of dolls with other doll's bodies to see what happens. This is where we watch Disney videos from my childhood on an old VHS player and big CRT TV and where I feel nostalgic at 7pm putting on the latest Disney obsession (right now it's Monsters Inc) and rewinding it before hitting the play button. Rewinding. Such a long time ago but such an important part of our evening routine.

I allow my children to watch one video at bed time and then the TV goes off at 8:30pm and it's sleep. They can play, create, make a mess, rustle their bed sheets and leave things laying around as long as they put it all back before lights out. They can stay awake as long as it's in this room and it works. It may not work for some but it works for us. We walk into the spare bedroom which is serving as a little walk in floordrobe wardrobe and put on mismatching pyjamas before crawling in or climbing up to bed.

This is a glimpse into our lives - this entire blog. From the messy parts to the pleasant parts to the parts that just look good through the lens of a camera but I always try to portray reality. I always sit here and wonder if it's an accurate representation of my life because I do want this to be a sort-of-kind-of scrapbook to look back on in the future. A scrapbook that documents our journey through life and the adventures we have. This is why I left the bedsheets as they were and the shelves and the lines and the windowsill...we are not perfect but we are us and to me, that's just perfection.

  6. I think that looks so lovely and pretty - perfect for the little'uns (although, if I'm honest, I'd totally go for a geometric pink wall in my bedroom if I could get away with it!) ;)

You've done really well. It sounds like your girls have a really happy and creative time with you!
