An Office In Progress

I've been dreaming of my own office space for a while but although we have two technically spare rooms (the dining room and a small box room) they both seem to be used for something for a few months before becoming overrun with things. These past few months I've been condensing the things I own so that the girls' bedroom is used for play and sleep, the spare bedroom is used as a walk in wardrobe for everyone's clothes, books etc and the dining room - well, it was supposed to be a dining room before my imagination took over and with those thoughts came orders to move the kitchen table back into the kitchen and out came the bucket of white paint.

Previously this room was grey and pink and used as a large play room for the girls but we found that it was just too much space for them and it was constantly messy to the point where I'd close the door on it rather than go in there. From that I wanted a real dining room because in my head I throw dinner parties for more than four people which my kitchen table currently seats. First of all, I may never be that person but I definitely am not yet and secondly, I didn't really want to take up an entire room with essentially a table. In the end I settled on a large office space that would be used for work, make up, photographs, reading, sewing and painting all in one. Anything creative that I do, I'll do in this room rather than making a mess in front of the TV like I have been.

So far, I'm really happy with how it's coming along. The walls are white, the furniture is exactly what I need, it's bright and airy without feeling cold and most of all comfortable. There's still a lot that needs work and a few new additions - the skirting and door frames need glossing, I need a desktop computer that stays in the room, a decent lamp, a new light shade for the overhead light, some kind of storage boxes for the storage unit to pretty it up a little, a high backed desk chair for long days just staring at a screen, lots of prints for the walls (there are no hooks at the moment) and a big rug but all of these do take money which I'm running short of at the moment. I'll be adding pieces as I go along from now on whether I pick them up new, in a sale or secondhand and no doubt updating on the new additions as they happen.

What do you think so far? Perhaps I should address the fridge freezer in there? Our fridge which belonged to our landlord broke down a few months ago and instead of paying to get it fixed I bought a secondhand replacement like for like as it was cheaper. However the day I bought the fridge our old one came back to life and for a few months we've been living with two fridges (one in the kitchen, one in here) and can't really bring ourselves to live with just one as they're pretty small and we need the space. It will eventually be sold off undoubtedly but for now, I'm very close to the tiramisu which is a pretty good deal.

  1. What an awesome office. We don't have a spare room atm so I have to improvise. My favourite place to work is the conservatory where it's lovely bright and quiet :D

  5. Beautiful space, Ella. Glad you addressed the fridge because I was going to ask what that was in the comments ;)

Your desk is great to take photographs on. I have a desk I just bought back in the fall, it's a distressed light blue vintage desk, and although I love it and don't want to get rid of it, I wish I had another desk that was plain white so that I would have a prettier place to take blog photos.

Don't stress about the little things that you still need to buy. I think that in reality, as humans, our house will never be exactly the way we want it as we are always changing our mind based off our creativity and what's in style.
Look forward to more posts like this.
