On The Subtle Changes

I've been in major overhaul mode these past few days. Since painting the kitchen table and chairs it's sparked something inside me to get everything in order and I've gone a little bit crazy. Even with a post-Eurovision whiskey hangover I managed to paint the skirting, door frames and doors downstairs from an ugly magnolia to a bright white and today I've spent almost all of it cleaning and organising. Even when I did venture out for a dog walk, on the way back we stopped in the pet shop to pick up a few treats and ended up coming away with a new dog bed to replace our tatty one that just can't be saved thanks to Dexter's puppy chewing phase.

Sadly I don't have the money to overhaul our entire house so I'm concentrating on making subtle upgrades to make a big impact. The skirting boards and banister changing from magnolia to white have made a huge difference in the way the hall looks and the white gate (which will soon have a floral design too) just makes the space feel a little more finished than it did before. Boyfriend brought home this bunch of reduced flowers on his way home from the school run which look lovely in the middle of the kitchen table (even with the pile of washing piled up on the chair). You can see them from the hall as you walk in the front door which I love. I've finally put out the slate place mats and coasters I bought a few weeks ago too which I really love. I need to buy two more place mats to make them work on the table but I've been loving using them as snack boards when friends come over (or when I'm alone and feeling fancier than a bowl because yes, I do that) and writing on them in chalk pen for photos. Photos that came out awfully and never made it to the blog, I should say but one day I'll learn how to take photos of food!

Tomorrow I'm re-upholstering the kitchen chairs and painting an old solid oak sideboard that has been ruined with pen and paint marks by it's previous owner, had the doors and handles pulled off and is generally in really bad shape. It was found discarded on the side of the road about a year ago and after four days of it sitting there, at 3am boyfriend and his friend lugged it home in the pouring rain and it's just been sat in our living room piled with things and not getting very much attention since. The bare bones of it are lovely though so I can't wait to get down to work on it and hopefully make it look a thousand times better than before. I'm still debating on whether a off-white or a pale grey would work better but no doubt there'll be a few before and after shots both here and on Instagram.

I also included a photo of my new copper coloured wig because I love it. It has no real place in this post but if I was stretching (and I am) it's a subtle change, right? I do love a good overhaul! In the next few days expect quite a few more structured posts while I'm feeling organised - probably a few tips and less fluffy writing - but no doubt there'll be more photos of things in my house when I'm uninspired sat in Nutella stained pyjamas sooner rather than later.

  1. It looks lovely, really clean, fresh and pretty. It's amazing what a swish of paint and fresh flowers can do. I love the heart shaped slate too. I'm really looking forward to seeing some before and after pictures of your sideboard, sounds interesting :)

  3. I love your decorating posts! At the moment I live with my boyfriend and his parents, so I have absolutely no control over interiors. I'm dreaming of the day I get to decorate my own house, but for now I guess I'll try to live vicariously through your blog posts!
