Well aren't I just in a fabulous mood and it's all down to this baby that's now sitting proudly on my desk in the office. I've been using a Mac since 2006 and I now can't get on with Windows computers so when it came to buying something for the desk as my laptop was threatening suicide every two days it was natural to get an iMac. However even with second hand iMac's there is the huge downfall of the price and I was looking about £600-700 for something that met my needs which I just couldn't justify.
Browsing through eBay one day last week I found this souped up 2006 iMac G5 with all the accessories for just £200. I couldn't quite believe it as the specs were pretty decent by any standards let alone for an almost ten year old machine. I did some research and found that with a bit of work this could be legit so decided to liase with the seller about exactly what I was going to be getting. I was seriously impressed and a day or so later I paid. This afternoon it arrived with the postman and man, it's good to be able to sit at a desk and type on an actual keyboard again. The display isn't massive at only 17" but it's a step up from my laptop and it looks so much brighter and clearer that I can totally handle it.
I'm one of those people that doesn't need the best of everything but only the best for my needs. I was the same with my camera - I had a (by any standards) much better DSLR in my hands and decided to go with a significant downgrade because it felt better to me. It's still a good camera (Canon 600D) and serves all my needs with a good lens but there was no way I was paying extra when this just felt right. I feel the same about this computer. Sure, it'll need a bit of TLC, an external hard drive and a little bit of patience when it's not instantly zippy but after years and years of wanting one, I finally have it and it just feels so good. What's old to some is new to me and that's so incredibly fine. Fine, fine, fine.
PS. Don't tell anyone but I actually prefer the white plastic casing. Sure, it's not as sleek as the aluminium unibody designs but this is the reason I've kept my old white MacBook for so long. It feels good to the touch unlike the trackpads on the newer models I've tried. If only I could have this casing in a souped up techy model, eh?
Fantastic deal. Getting the latest model isn't everything, it's about what suits your needs. As for not being able to get on with Windows now, I've just made the switch to Mac and it's taking some getting used to!
ReplyDeleteYou got such a good bargain, I'm always worried about trying things like this on eBay.

ReplyDeleteUgh, I'd do anything for any sort of macbook! They are just SO expensive! You're totally right in buying what suits your needs and not what the latest model is, sometimes the price is just too hard to justify.
