"Onwards and upwards" is one of the phrases my mind is glued to when things go wrong in my life which can be incredibly often. I get upset about them however much I dislike myself for doing so and I fret while wiping tears on a jumper sleeve but I don't allow myself to do it for too long because almost always there is a solution. The solution may not be readily available and it may take a lot of bravery but it's there, amongst the new perspective.
I noticed one day how our perception can be shifted just by moving a small amount. From eye level our garden is a little bit of a wasteland consisting of a lot of grey cement, dodgy paving work with little to no greenery. It all just looks a little unkempt and a little more than drab peppered with the occasional burst of pale pink from a bike abandoned on its side. However if you look up just a little you're greeted with the rooftops, bursting greenery that makes its way right to the very top and you can just see out to the hills and the rest of town against a sky that could almost be a watercolour if you tip toe over the sight of the neighbours wall. These photos were taken in Autumn, right at the beginning when everything was beginning to change and as of right now there's not much left in the garden that holds much immediate beauty.
However, just like with life, I know that the joy will return again in due course and as with perception what was once beautiful can often be perceived as less so but with time, a slightly different angle and some patience it will blossom.
This is a beautiful post Ella, such wonderful and very wise words - I all too often focus on what's below me (such as with the tendency to look down when I walk - though I'm getting over that!) when, really, if I were to square my shoulders and shift my eye-line I'd no doubt be greeted with something well worth stopping and looking at :) Thank you for reminding me!

"Because almost always there is a solution"... I think once that you realize this, obstacles become challenges and challenges are fun to over ride.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures!
Such a beautiful post Ella. I really resonate with the onwards and upwards mindset, especially with shifting your eye-line and seeing more from a different perspective. I've always, always found comfort in the night-sky, even from a young age. When I was around 5/6, I used to sit on my windowsill, draw the curtains and read with a little torch, simply because the night-sky appealed to me so much! My Dad thought I was slightly out of it, haha! xx

I also love to look up, because when life's small (in the grand scheme of things) worries and petty day-to-day annoyances get to me, I find it cathartic to look up and remember none of it really matters. It's all so insignificant and we're a jot in the middle of space and so should try not to sweat the small stuff. It's not always easy, but it does help.
